I wonder does the ability to send longer messages also cost more in terms of fees? I imagine that since we are not near the limit anymore that the answer would be no but this shall serve as a test. for the assumption
It depends how long of a message you write. The fee is 1 satoshi per byte. So longer messages = more bytes = more fee.
