I use to believe in this conspiracy. It was compelling. The evidence just doesnt support it. Once you see how the Truth movement edits footage, and plain lies to people.
Looks like it's an American thing, it's a lot more comforting for them to believe it was an inside job than accepting an enemy from the outside could hurt them so bad at home.
I've also heard that some people, when leaving behind religious beliefs, will sometimes turn to conspiracy theory. Not sure why, but it matches when some of us believed them.
In that case they abandon a specific affiliation, they don't abandon religious thinking.
