unchallengeable monopolies are bad. especially monopolies on violence.
replied 2687d
You know that is actually an interesting point in the anarchist topic. Mostly because I think it is seen wrong. The state has a monopoly on enforcement.
replied 2686d
this seems more technically accurate
replied 2687d
One could also argue that this is where guns right comes into play as well. The right to bear arms means there is no monopoly on violence.

How much money of yours is needed to be owned by someone else for it to be slavery? 10%? 90%? 100%? 50%?
Taxation is Constitutional.

That said, I prefer a sales tax over an income tax. Income can be hidden, but sales tax is often still paid by those who make money off the black market. I know that helps BC's economy

Why are you trying to hide your money from taxes?
replied 2685d
I'm not, but I do live in a place with a booming black market. That black market did help prop up the economy during the last recession.

I prefer a self enforcing system when possible

Is self-policing possible in a systematically dishonest system if the root misperception of theft - taxation - as the basis of society, remains thought of as necessary for society?
replied 2684d
I am against self policing. I meant self enforcing, like supply and demand self enforcing a fair price.

I am not convinced that taxation is theft. I think it is necessary for society.

Taxation is theft, and taxation is necessary to sustain society, are not exclusive ideals.

All taxation is theft?

Yes.

Without taxes, can a 'State' exist? Can a government exist?

Hardy.

Personal income tax especially.

Is there a way to take money without regard for consent.... that is consensual?
replied 2686d
I think that in a representative democracy the people decide that, not each individual. The amount requested is something you can argue about, or even leave to a different place.
anarchovegan
replied 2685d
You think that others, and not just you, decide how much of what you make is yours, in representative democracy?
If you built a house yourself, is it no longer yours, if so voted?
replied 2685d
Yes, law isn't decided by the individual, but by a representative that had the support of the most individuals in a given area. Restricted by judicial interpretation of a constitution.
anarchovegan
replied 2685d
Law? What about a house that you build yourself and live in that you are voted out of in a representative democratic session about the ownership of your house?
replied 2684d
I would t live in a place like that, and if I choose to live in such a place I would do so knowingly. That said mobility isn't always easy for the poor.
replied 2686d
Why is taxation unconstitutional? The constitution limits the powers of the government, but besides fighting the British, it was collecting taxes was needed to fund the army.
anarchovegan
replied 2685d
You misread.
Taxation is Constitutional.
replied 2685d
Oh, I actually assumed that was a typo. So you are saying taxation is fine then?
anarchovegan
replied 2685d
No; I'm saying The Constitution is an morally-depraved document.
replied 2684d
Ah, I would say it isn't perfect, but a constitution is itself essential to freedom. A constitution is a document that limits and describes the powers of a governing body.
replied 2686d
yeah, the issue is more gov banning competition for enforcement. eg if citizens could choose from private companies too prices would fall & quality would rise.
replied 2685d
While the level of violence allowed depends on the level, there are private security agencies. From those only permitted to perform citizens arrest, to those who can use deadly force.
replied 2687d
I would think the line when a state has a monopoly on violence is when self defense is outlawed.
replied 2686d
true, but it is shorthand & legal uses of violence by citizens are narrow (self-defense, immediate danger only etc). like free speech isnt totally free (limited in narrow cases)
replied 2685d
Sport would be another use of citizen violence. That said most state restrictions on violence were asked for by the people. We demand a group that can only make laws, to do something.
