Look for the clues in the original words.
The original words of the original documents were communicated by God (John 10:35-36) with instruction for us to follow today (1 Timothy 3:16); the words in our English Bibles are from God to the degree to which they reflect His original words.
______________[1] the original words. Over the years, scribes made thousands of copies and translated Scripture into foreign languages. Because scribes are humans and humans make mistakes, certain mistakes crept in. As we continue to discover manuscripts, we compare the differences between one group of copies and another group of copies in order to pinpoint the original words:
What are the words in the largest number of manuscripts, especially the earliest manuscripts?
If the manuscript evidence is not obvious, then which words seem most likely to be the original?
________________[2] the original words into English words. The original words can be difficult to translate into English. As we learn more about the original language, we seek better ways to translate the meaning. Seeking and translating the original words result in changes, and changes can result in opposition. The authors of the King James Version described their opponent’s argument in this manner: “Hath the church been deceived, say they, all this while? Hath her sweet bread been mingled with leaves, here silver with dross, her wine with water, her milk with lime?”[3]

Clue 1: Repeated _______________[5].
The author highlights the point of his story by repeating keywords. Two examples:
The same words “believe” (πιστεύω) is used in John 20:25; 20:27; 20:29 and 20:31. Based on its strategic placement, we know that we will be blessed with eternal life if we believe in Jesus as “my Lord and my God.”
The word “face” (פָּנִים) is used in Gen 32:3, 16, 17, 20-21, 30; 33:3, 10, 14, 18, appearing four times in Genesis 32:20 alone. The word connects Jacob’s relationship with Esau and his relationship with God in Genesis 33:10; this indicates that the story is about both of these relationships. The point of the story: Jacob would be defined by his relationship with God, not by his relationship with Esau.
Clue 2: Repeated ________________.[6]
The author indicates the point of his story by writing similar thoughts in a similar way. Example: Adam was supposed to keep the garden so that no one ate from that tree; Adam did not keep the garden.
Genesis 2:15-17:
They must not eat from a certain tree.
God placed Adam in the garden to work (עָבַד) the garden.
God placed Adam in the garden also to keep (שָׁמַר) the garden.
Genesis 3:21-24
They must not eat from a certain tree.
God drives Adam out of the garden to work (עָבַד) the ground.
God places an angel in the garden to keep (שָׁמַר) the way to the tree with a flaming sword.
Clue 3: Direct _______________[7] to Other Parts of the Bible.
Another part of the Bible might give us insight on this section of Scripture.
Adam & Eve must not eat from the tree of life in the garden (Genesis 3:23-24).
The overcomer may eat from the tree of life in the garden (Revelation 2:7).
Clue 4: _____________[8].
By examining the Old Testament, we can get a true fact; however, we miss the important part for us without Jesus. For the apostles, to preach God’s word was to preach about Jesus, according to Acts 5:42 and Acts 6:2. Paul makes similar statements in 1 Corinthians 1:23 and 2 Corinthians 4:5. When we find the message of a story in the Old Testament, here’s a possible question for us to ask: What similar fact is true for us because of what Jesus did for us?
Genesis
Jesus
Because Jacob held onto God, he would be identified by his relationship with God, not by his disgraceful relationship with his brother.
If we hold onto Jesus, we will be identified by our Savior, not by our past sins.
When you gain the message of the passage,
_________[9] it (Psalm 1:2).
_________[10] it (James 1:19-27).
_________[11].
