When you get pointless internet points everyone just follows the hivemind. rep system will suck as it stops people from putting their real views/ideas forward for fear of bad rep
The tinfoil hatter in me tends to think point systems were part of social media design(especially reddit) from the outset to allow for the manipulation of what goes viral and what dies
CEO of reddit was caught out stealth editing users posts and changing them to suit his political preference and even aiming the abuse at moderators he didnt like.... nothing happened
during the elections the Clintons paid 1 million USD to have "Correct The Record" they did nothing but try to manipulate negative conversations online to become positive about them
