The hope is that they will be equally unhappy. And there is something to be said for knowing that everyone is in a stinky situation together, until your stinky neighbor informs on you.
Hard to think of a worse long-term situation than knowing your life is terrible but having to act like it's great or risk it getting even worse. Basically psychological torture.
Which is one thing that is great about standard capitalistic or modern western societies, everyone is able to freely express discontent and dissatisfaction without fear of the state-
Pretty sure the USA is the last bastion of true free speech on the planet. Even there it's been a big fight as of late.
