If you are on a Windows 10 machine, you can press ⊞+. (hold down windows key and press the period) and an emoji window pops up. You can even type a word and it will search.
Android keyboards usually support emoji too. Don't know about GNU/Linux or Macs.
This is protocol change and not just an UX change. I don't think memo should change it's protocol too often
