"Bitcoin is an open source p2p system which was originally highly prized for being capture resistant. If Bitcoin were not open source, or if elements of it were trademarked or patented, then a malactor could trivially
hire up the devs and destroyit by perverting its usability, essentially converting it into a centralized corporate/government coin. Fortunately nobody controls the Bitcoin code or the
name "Bitcoin" so it cannot be captured. Anyone is free to fork the code and call it Bitcoin. If this were not true, its unclear what the point of Bitcoin would be in the first place."
