Why is it expected that I tip the waiter and not the chef? I understand they get paid less but then why not pay everyone less and have everyone tip everyone for no reason other than so the manager gets more money?
because you come from a country that despite having legal minimum wage, lets business owners break the law and pay 3 dollars an hour to staff who then shame customers into paying more
Servers and bar tenders at most decent restaurants in Chicago make a very good buck. Better than most entry level office jobs. There's no career advancement though.
