Reddit is planning on going IPO soon, hence the requirement of valid email for registration. They're a private company beholden to shareholders, and there is already a lot of behind-the-scenes manipulation of subs.
is it really a proper community if it can be manipulated and distorted by a small handful of individuals looking to make shareholders happy?
No its not, Anything that is privately owned is not "community" anything.
