The Dollar was once pegged to gold. But since no one actually withdrew their gold, banks could run a fractional reserve. When this was sufficiently established and no one used gold as a means of exchange anymore,
the pegging to physical gold was removed altogether. What do you think will happen to BTC, if people can't use it as a means of exchange and have to rely on banks in order to use it.
