Part of the reason why Martin Luther filed for a figurative divorce with the catholic church after it could not keep itself from indulging. Martin Luther was all about expropriation
& I realize it is meant to inspire awe and divine revelations in people.
There is an innate human tendency to think that good things (ie large wealth) comes to good or righteous people, good smiles upon the good, so displays of extreme wealth is a sort of/1
Sensible political/religious move, had we been inclined to think the other way around we would see the most malnourished and and wretched conditions being hailed as great authorities.
And I enjoy being in them/seeing all their art. Just seems hypocritical given their mission. part of it is also just that they’ve held on to all this one of a kind art for so long.
why I dont mind small simple christian churches in the US. like to think more of their money is going to mission work. the ornate Catholic Churches are very beautiful
