Sounds like a chicken and egg problem. Cuz you have to define work, and There's always the question - to what end are we working?
"Meaning" is much closer to the point I believe. I like to define art as something that has more meaning than prosaic language. Something that shows us a deeper vision of ourselves.
Hahaha that's the rub isn't it! You certainly know when something you're doing is meaningless! I think we could zero in on something that most (non nihilist)humans would agree with.
