I once thought myself a bit of an anarchist. The various debate groups, and the various sources of AnCaps and AnComs at least let me understand the value of capitalism.

thats a positive! I don't mind minarchists, or libertarians, really just want to be left alone. I just think there's no way to prevent state power from creeping (eg early USA to now).

Guess my response would be whenever the state & market compete, free market does a better job more efficiently (eg mail). Would this not extend to all state functions?

I personally think healthcare is done better by the state. There are pros and cons, and I think the better balance with healthcare is having public coverage.

My disagreements are mostly general gov vs free market things (gov being slower, less efficient, lower quality care etc)

I guess my problem with private health coverage is that there is no actual competition. Pay, or die, is not really free market.

i disagree but havent dug into details. & I realize there is massive momentum for it to be state provided (either just state funded or run by the state).

So it isn't exactly free in Canada. It's just that no one worries about paying for life saving treatment. Anything dental, or elective, is private.

Essentially the province covers basic things, and we either pay or have worker provided extended coverage. So for election e things, and medication coverage you need private insurance

In Canada each province deals with healthcare in it's own way. The federal government just demands the provinces deal with it. It is a type of single payer system for essentials.

I like that the Canadian constitution clearly defines which matters are federal, and which are provincial. Whenever something seems like a grey area the courts decide.

would be nice, but I feel US courts wouldn't provide much of a check in the grey areas

yeah, as i understand it US const. should have limited fed gov & left most to states but of course fed grabs as much as possible. SMH 😒

It is funny how Canada was originally setup to give most power to the fed, but over time has moved more power to the provinces, and the USA went the other way, centralizing to the fed.

haha, funny in a sad way 😅. haven't looked into Canada gov. interesting to hear this. what forced it this way? any ideas of ways to promote decentralization more broadly?

The British set us up at first, with more federal power. Now the constitution can not be changed unless at least 7 out of the 10 provinces agree. Territories I think are federal.

It I k the fact that we didnt make our own constitution until 1982 was a big part. That was when provincial and federal jurisdiction was set. The courts seem pretty neutral.

could be part of it (wow so late 😄!) states move so slowly that the iteration times are hundreds of years. forming const. later you can pick the parts that work.

We had a constitution before then, but it was written by the British, and held in Britain. I think we have a pretty solid constitution. It was useful seeing what didnt work in others.

Been thinking about this. They demand centralized power? Or demand things like security, judgements in disagreements & other things the state currently provides?

I think what people demand is for "someone else" to make decisions, and take the blame when thigs go badly. The reward is praise if things dont go badly.

heard elon musk talk about mars gov. he mentioned sunset clauses or needing larger majority (~60%) to enact laws & smaller minority (~40%) to repeal laws. might contain gov creep

Talked about it here before, also dont see state power ever decreasing (except after revolution). Would indicate ppl prefer ‘exporting responsibility’ over increasing freedom :/

ahh, yeah I agree here (also, like you've said, why people would rather be a worker than the business owner).
