You retain the private key, so your software checks and if they haven't claimed the gifted BCH by transferring it to their own wallet by the deadline, you take it back. No mystery.

The way it was explained can be confusing, and Sherry is right about the possibility of people spending these tips and getting their money back,no matter which coin its on.

They are meant to be adoption drivers. Nobody is suggesting we start using paper wallets as cash in trade or anything. Somebody posted about this technique a few months ago.
