I'll give it a second look. having not done it, it looks difficult (especially matching all the specs). Looks like a good learning opportunity.
Pcpartpicker is really good for that, they have a list you can choose your parts from that will report any compatibility issues as you go. It gets a lot less intimidating very quickly
Laptops are a bit trickier, but PCs are pretty standard, once you know what you're looking at, it's actually very similar to car repair
A lot of it you can see what they're doing though, there are only about 7 interchangeable and critical parts to most computers, and problems will usually only hit one at a time, unless there's a fire
